As the oil continues to gush at several thousand barrels a day into the Gulf of Mexico, bloggers and the media alike continue to speculate about potential class action litigation.  British media broke a news story about shareholder derivative class action filed against BP. US  media also broke news about the possibility of class actions being filed.  Bloggers actively speculate about the likelihood and possibility of class actions.

Summer associates have no need to speculate about whether class action litigation has been filed or not.  FED-FILING-ALL contains federal filings, including class action complaints filed with the federal courts.  A recent search in FED-FILING-ALL

(class /2 action & da(2010) ) & TI(british /2 petroleum)

reveals two class actions have been filed in Federal court against BP.

Also, try a docket search:

Database: dock-all

Query: DEF(B.P. “BRITISH PETROLEUM”) & PLA(“SIMILARLY SITUATED” “ON BEHALF OF” “CLASS ACTIOIN”) & FLD(2010) & OIL-POLLUTION (33 +2 U.S.C.! +2 2701)

Note: 33 USCA 2701 is the Oil Pollution Act and is referenced in the relevant dockets.
